Branch, the mobile marketing and deep-linking company, laid off more than 100 employees on August 9, 2024. No official reason was given for the cuts. The layoffs had an outsized impact on Nova Launcher, the popular Android home screen app Branch acquired in 2022. The development team was reduced to a single full-time employee, Kevin Barry, the original creator. Cliff Wade, Nova Launcher's Director of Customer Relations, was among those let go after more than eight years at the company. Barry acknowledged the company would continue development but with "fewer resources to work with" and at a reduced scope compared to original plans. Customer support, public relations, and other functions tied to the launcher were also eliminated, leaving the app's long-term viability in question.
