Bungie has 1 publicly reported layoff round on record (most recent July 31, 2024). A total of about 220 employees were affected across these rounds.
Layoff history
On July 31, 2024, Bungie cut 220 employees, roughly 17% of its workforce, as the Seattle studio grappled with overexpansion and a run of costly missteps. CEO Pete Parsons wrote in a staff memo that the company had been "overly ambitious," that financial safety margins were "subsequently exceeded," and that Bungie had been "running in the red." Contributing factors included the underperformance of Destiny 2: Lightfall, the delayed release of The Final Shape, and a broader economic slowdown that hit while the studio was seeding multiple incubation projects. An additional 115 workers moved into roles at Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation Studios rather than being let go outright. Affected employees received severance, pro-rated bonuses, and extended health coverage. Around 850 staff remain, focused on Destiny and the upcoming game Marathon.
Reason: Overexpansion, exceeded financial safety margins, Destiny 2 underperformance
