Layoff history
TikTok parent ByteDance cut fewer than 500 content moderation jobs in October 2024, primarily in Malaysia, as the company accelerated a shift to AI-powered moderation systems. The affected employees, most of whom reviewed content for guideline violations, were notified by email. A TikTok spokesperson said the changes were part of "ongoing efforts to further strengthen our global operating model for content moderation," noting that automated technologies now remove 80% of violative content on the platform. The company said it planned to invest $2 billion globally in trust and safety in 2024 alone. The Malaysia cuts followed earlier rounds in Ireland and elsewhere during the same year as the platform restructured its human review operations worldwide.

ByteDance moved to cut 450 jobs in Indonesia in June 2024, the first round of reductions since TikTok Shop and local e-commerce giant Tokopedia formally merged under PT Tokopedia in January of that year. The combined entity employed around 5,000 people, making the cuts roughly 9% of the Indonesian operation's staff. Eliminating duplicate roles in advertising, operations, and other e-commerce functions was cited as the primary driver. ByteDance had taken a 75% controlling stake in Tokopedia with a commitment to invest more than $1.5 billion. The company said it was "grateful" for employees' contributions during the merger and aimed to support affected workers through the transition, though specific severance terms were not disclosed.
