Clear has 2 publicly reported layoff rounds on record between September 16, 2022 and August 1, 2025. A total of about 335 employees were affected across these rounds.
Layoff history
Indian tax-tech company Clear laid off approximately 145 employees on August 1, 2025, representing 16% of its workforce, in what it called a strategic organizational restructuring. The timing drew attention because the cuts fell during India's peak income tax filing season, weeks before the September 15 government deadline. Sources told Entrackr the actual impact was closer to 20-25%, and some of those terminated were freshers who had joined as recently as two months prior. Clear has not raised funding since October 2021, despite 93% revenue growth in FY24, and sources cited a cash crunch as an underlying factor. The company said it provided enhanced severance packages, continued health insurance, and outplacement support. It was Clear's third significant layoff round, following a 20% cut in September 2022.
Reason: Strategic organizational restructuring amid cash crunch and no funding since 2021
