Grammarly laid off 230 employees on February 7, 2024, spanning most of the company's functions and multiple geographies, including 37 staff members in Ukraine and 82 in the United States. CEO Rahul Roy-Chowdhury described the cuts as a restructuring to build "a different mix of capabilities and skillsets" for what he called the AI-enabled workplace, and stressed the move was not driven by financial pressure. The company had grown from roughly 200 to 1,000 employees over five years before the reduction. Each affected employee received a minimum of three months' base pay, along with health insurance support and career coaching. Workers in Ukraine were also permitted to keep company-issued laptops and equipment. Roles eliminated included the head of brand design, head of human insights, and 17 software engineers.
