February 28, 2025
Grubhub cut 500 employees (23% of staff)
500 laid off 23% of workforce Location SF Bay Area

Grubhub eliminated 500 corporate positions on February 28, 2025, cutting 23% of its workforce roughly six weeks after Wonder completed its $650 million acquisition of the food delivery platform. CEO Howard Migdal told staff the decision was made to reduce management layers, bring leaders closer to the business, and remove duplication as Grubhub began integrating functions with Wonder. The cuts spanned all teams but did not affect delivery drivers. Wonder, the food startup led by former Walmart executive Marc Lore, had bought Grubhub from Just Eat Takeaway at a roughly 90% discount from the platform's pandemic-era peak valuation. Despite the headcount reduction, Grubhub reported positive free cash flow in 2024 and year-over-year growth in order volume heading into early 2025.

Reason: Post-acquisition integration with Wonder, removing management layers and redundant functions
