Luminar Technologies laid off 140 employees in May 2024, cutting 20% of its workforce as part of a shift to an asset-light business model. CEO Austin Russell said the cost structure that had taken the lidar company to its current position "no longer fit the needs of the company," and that the restructuring would reduce annual operating costs by $50 to $65 million. The Orlando-based company deepened a manufacturing partnership with Taiwanese contract maker TPK Holding, following its first lidar deliveries for the Volvo EX90 in April 2024. Most contract workers were also terminated. Luminar planned to sub-lease portions of its global real estate footprint while retaining its Florida facility for development, testing, and R&D.
