Peloton announced it would lay off approximately 400 employees, 15% of its workforce, on May 2, 2024, the same day CEO Barry McCarthy announced his resignation. McCarthy, brought out of retirement in early 2022 to revive the struggling fitness company, said the cuts were necessary because Peloton could not achieve sustainable free cash flow with its existing cost structure. The goal was to reduce annual expenses by more than $200 million by the end of fiscal 2025. Board chair Karen Boone and director Chris Bruzzo were named interim co-CEOs while a permanent replacement is sought. The announcement came ahead of a Q3 2024 earnings report that showed worse-than-expected revenue, mounting losses, and a 21% year-over-year drop in paid app subscriptions. Peloton's market cap, once near $50 billion at its pandemic peak, had fallen to roughly $1 billion. The company also said it would cut retail showroom locations and pull back on international expansion.
