Runtastic has 2 publicly reported layoff rounds on record between March 16, 2023 and September 16, 2024. A total of about 240 employees were affected across these rounds.
Layoff history
Adidas announced in September 2024 that it would close the Austrian offices of fitness app developer Runtastic, cutting around 170 jobs across sites in Linz, Salzburg, and Vienna by mid-2025. The sportswear giant acquired Runtastic in 2015 for 220 million euros, but the unit's performance never met expectations. Adidas cited a need to realign its digital strategy and said it wanted to "work more effectively on the digital offering and at the same time align structures with market conditions." The closure followed an earlier decision earlier in 2024 to remove Runtastic apps from app stores and consolidate around the Adidas Running and Adidas Training brands. Going forward, those apps will be managed from Adidas hubs in Herzogenaurach, Amsterdam, and Zaragoza. Affected employees were offered the option to apply for roles at those international locations.
