Bengaluru-based tech upskilling startup Scaler laid off 150 employees in April 2024, its first workforce reduction since the company was founded in 2019. The cuts fell mainly on marketing and sales functions. Cofounder Abhimanyu Saxena said the move was not performance-driven, framing it instead as a structural change: "we have designed a new way of working to be able to achieve sustainable growth while delivering the best learning experience." The decision came against a complicated financial backdrop. Scaler posted 388% revenue growth in FY23, reaching Rs 317 crore, but losses climbed 90% in the same period to Rs 330 crore. The company had raised more than $75 million in funding. Affected employees were told they would receive support to ensure a smooth transition, though specific severance terms were not disclosed.
