Smartsheet cut more than 120 employees in early October 2025, shortly after the exit of CEO Mark Mader, who retired at the end of September following more than a decade leading the company. Sunny Gupta, co-founder of Seattle-based Apptio, stepped in as acting CEO and executive chair. The layoffs followed Smartsheet's $8.4 billion take-private by Blackstone and Vista Equity Partners in January 2025. The new ownership had been emphasizing AI integration across both operations and product features, though the company did not publicly link the cuts to a specific restructuring plan. Smartsheet declined to confirm the exact headcount affected. The Bellevue-based work management software firm had grown to more than 3,300 employees by 2023, nearly tripling its workforce in five years before going private.
