Sonder cut 106 corporate employees in February 2024, representing 17% of its corporate workforce, as the short-term rental company worked to shed underperforming properties and reduce overhead. The San Francisco-based firm said the reductions were tied to an oversized portfolio of underperforming leases and a broader push toward positive cash flow. Severance and benefits costs were estimated at $2 million to $3 million, with most payments expected in Q1 2024. The cuts were projected to generate roughly $11 million in annual savings. It was Sonder's third significant reduction since going public via SPAC in January 2022, following cuts of 21% in mid-2022 and 14% in early 2023. The company planned to complete the reductions by the end of March.
