New U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods triggered a temporary layoff of roughly 140 workers at Montreal textile manufacturer SRTX in early February 2025, affecting about 40% of its nearly 350 staff and contractors. The company, which operates one of North America's largest traceable textile factories and makes tights sold primarily in U.S. markets, was hit by a combined duty burden of 41% after Washington announced a 25% tariff on top of an existing 16% duty and eliminated the de minimis exemption. About 85% of SRTX revenue comes from U.S. customers. CEO Katherine Homuth told affected employees the layoffs were expected to last up to six months, and said the company was still closing a fundraise critical to reaching profitability. Workers retained access to benefits during the period and could request payout of accrued vacation.
