Tesla dissolved its entire Supercharger division in late April 2024, cutting roughly 500 people including Senior Director Rebecca Tinucci, who had led EV charging for six years and engineered the industry's wide adoption of Tesla's NACS plug standard. Director of Vehicle Programs Daniel Ho, a 10-year veteran who oversaw development of the Model S, 3, and Y, was also let go. The action was part of a broader company-wide reduction of more than 10% of Tesla's global workforce ordered by CEO Elon Musk following a first quarter in which revenue fell roughly 9% year-over-year, the steepest decline since 2012. Musk said Tesla would continue building out the Supercharger network "just at a slower pace for new locations" with an emphasis on uptime rather than expansion. The decision alarmed industry observers because the charging network is widely seen as Tesla's strongest competitive asset, particularly after other automakers adopted NACS. Tesla shares fell nearly 6% on the news.

An April 2024 internal memo from CEO Elon Musk told staff that Tesla would cut more than 10% of its global workforce, roughly 14,000 jobs. Musk said the company's rapid growth had produced duplication of roles and functions in some areas, and that a thorough organization-wide review was needed to reduce costs and raise productivity for the next phase of growth. The companywide cuts landed during a stretch of softening electric-vehicle sales growth, repeated price cuts, and a decline in quarterly deliveries. Several senior executives departed around the same time.
