Layoff history
Tome Biosciences eliminated its entire workforce of 131 employees in August 2024 after a Series C fundraising round failed, effectively shutting down operations. The Boston-based gene editing startup had raised $213 million at its public launch in December 2023, but investor appetite for preclinical gene editing companies collapsed before the company could close additional funding. CEO Rahul Kakkar acknowledged the situation directly, saying: "Despite our clear scientific progress, investor sentiment has shifted dramatically across the gene editing space, particularly for preclinical companies." Management said it was in "ongoing confidential conversations with multiple parties" about potential acquisition or partnership deals. A WARN Act notice covering the layoffs was filed on August 23, 2024.
